Direct Aid Iraq recently received this communication, which was circulated in Iraq during the week of September 11. It is an expression of support for a recent mobilization that took place in Baghdad, calling for an end to political violence. A reminder of all that continues to happen in Iraq, below the deafening silence of the media.

Nonviolence Group in Iraq September 9, 2009

Laonf, the Iraqi nonviolence group, announces its support for the initiative led by a group of Iraqi civil society organizations in Baghdad, that come together and rally in the city asking everybody to take into account the interests of citizens and not expose more Iraqis to violence. No more victims for political conflicts, and parties that only aim at reaching more power!

The initiative also stresses the fact that respect of human rights and basic freedoms – particularly freedom of assembly and expression –  is linked to the achievement of security and peace in our beloved Iraq.

Our group is inviting and calling its bravest members and friends to participate in the people’s march that will start at nine in the morning of Thursday, 10 September 2009 from the court of Abdul Karim Qasim / al-Rashid Street / Ekd Christians. Our slogan will be “Let’s launch our alarm, to stop the Iraqi bloodshed”, in solidarity with the innocent citizens that were victims of the last bombs and their families, and to condemn all forms of violence.

This is another occasion to confirm the principled position of the nonviolence group, that there is no alternative but non-violent popular struggle for expressing the interests of the people and bringing change, ensuring human rights and social justice.
