After Kidnapping, Abu Naseer needs Resettlement

In Iraq, Abu Naseer was a mechanical engineer, working in the oil industry in the south of the country. After the US invasion of Iraq and overthrow of its government, as criminality and lawlessness spread, kidnapping became a business in Iraq. In 2005, Abu Naseer’s three year old son, Ali, was kidnapped.

The boy was tortured, and the kidnappers demanded a large ransom for his release. Abu Naseer was able to raise $12,000, which he used to ransom his son. Together with the rest of their family, they then fled to Jordan.

But in Jordan their troubles have continued. The trauma of kidnapping and torture persist for Ali and for the entire family. And Abu Naseer has been threatened, persecuted, and beaten because he is not Muslim.

Because of the family’s vulnerability, Direct Aid Iraq cannot reveal further details of their situation. We can tell you that Abu Naseer desperately needs to be resettled. “I dream of resettlement,” he says, “for my children’s future.”

We can also tell you that DAI is working closely with lawyers to support resettlement for Abu Naseer’s family. And in the meantime, we are providing psychological and concrete support to the family.
